MEETUP iGEM HISPAM 2020

This year we decided to organize the first-ever iGEM HISPAM Meetup. For the first time, we gathered iGEMers from all Hispanamerican countries, from iGEM alumni and team members to PIs, advisors and even people from After iGEM and iGEM HQ. Our main goal was to provide valuable information for all the assistants, and that is why we made a poll at the very beginning to know the necessities of everyone and consider them when making the schedule.

The event consisted of four weeks, each one with a main topic: (1) making an iGEM project, (2) reporting results, (3) science communication and (4) after iGEM. All conferences were given by someone related to iGEM; however, it was open for everyone, so we could have more people interested in iGEM.

Calgary

Throughout the year, Calgary’s team mentored and helped us to develop our Human Practices activities, through Zoom meetings. In those meetings, we expressed our ideas and they helped us to shape them, as well as consider new possibilities for our project. We want to thank them for all the hours spent with us and all the ideas they gave us.

DTU-Denmark

We worked together to make stakeholders research and human practices ideas discussion. In our case, Denmark's team searched for firefighting foam producers in their country and we searched for enzyme producers in ours. With these activities, both teams were able to know more about stakeholders outside of our countries.

Ohio State

As part of our safety activities, we worked together to analyze biotechnology regulations in both countries to compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of each one of the legal systems. It was really helpful for us to identify the strengths and weaknesses of Mexico’s regulations. The analysis made is further explained in our safety section.

SPECIAL MENTIONS

For all the teams that, despite not participating in this edition of iGEM, continued working and collaborating.

Tec-Chihuahua 2019

Tec-Chihuahua’s team mentorship has been very important for the development of our business model. Besides that, they pointed out some important points for us to improve and gave us advice on how to do it. As a result for this collab, we were able to further develop our entrepreneurship efforts.

Gliksys (TecMonterrey_Gdl) 2021

We worked together along with Estación Meiquer, a Mexican educational startup, in order to create some activities for children focused on science topics, making them easy and funny for them and their parents. This activity is further explained in our education section.

UNILA

Even though the SYN FRONTERAS team from UNILA is not officially formed, they have shown the iGEM spirit in all the activities we have made together. We had the opportunity to give a conference for them, explaining how a team works through the iGEM season. And we also worked together in biotec latina activities. Biotec Latina’s description is available in our education section.

iGEM Bolivia

Same as UNILA’s team, the first-ever Bolivia’s iGEM team is not participating this year, but that didn’t stop them to participate in our activities with Latin American teams, such as in the iGEM Global Meetup, where Bolivia’s team members helped us to organize it, as well as with Biotec Latina activities.

Synthetic Biobots

Synthetic Biobots is the first Universidad de Guadalajara’s team ever. We have been in contact to mentor them through their team activities for their future 2021 participation.
